A place with history

1927

Das Glaswerk is purpose built for OSRAM to designs by architect Waldemar Pattri and is home to the first fully automated mass production of glass light bulbs.

The production facility is the first of its kind in continental Europe and is celebrated as epochal.

1927

1930er

With the invention of the high-pressure mercury vapor lamp, the production line had to be expanded in the early 1930s.

In order to produce the large quantities of quartz tubes required for the lamps, the company replaces the time-consuming manual work with its own quartz tube drawing plant in 1937.

1930er

1945

During the Second World War, large sections of the factory are heavily damaged. The greatest destruction is caused by a single attack on 28 March 1945.

1946

Immediately after the end of the war, the remaining staff starts work repairing the factory. Production is resumed as early as 1947.

1972

In order to concentrate the production of fluorescent and high-pressure discharge lamps at the site, construction of a new lamp factory begins at the end of the 1960s .

In 1972, the new OSRAM lamp factory, the most advanced tubular glass plant in Europe, opens.

1972

2021

On 1 July 2021, the independent investment manager AVENTOS acquires the venerable site at Nonnendammallee 44.

OSRAM remains on site as tenant and main user under a sale-and-leaseback agreement.
